Vintage to Modern: Bridal Trends Over The Decades

The bridal world wouldn’t be what is it today without the styles and trends from the old days. We explored all the bridal gown trends over the last couple of decades from the 1900s to 2000s.

1920’s

The 1920s were all about loose silhouettes, ornate beadwork, floor length gown. The gown would be accessorised with cathedral length veils, elaborate headpieces or delicate crowns. In this time period showing calf was ‘daring’.

1930’s

The 1930s were inspired by Hollywood glamour. With minimal embellishments, silk and satin were the most popular fabrics during the 1930’s. The dress material also had very minimal elements of beadwork, applique, and embroidery. The look also had to be finished with a long flowing bouquet.

1940’s

1940s women typically wore pieces they already owned to reflect the countries austerity during the war. Necklines deepened, waists became more accentuated, and sleeves were adorned with jewels and embellishments.

1950s

1950s was the rise of the princess A-line and ballgown silhouette. Fitted bodices and full skirts were in. Scooped and sweetheart necklines came into fashion however strapless gowns were considered ‘daring’. Actresses within American cinema such as Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly were incredibly influential on the decades bridal trends

1960’s

Boat necklines and modest silhouettes such as tea cup skirts dominated bridal fashion of the 1960’s. Three quarter length sleeves and shoulder length veils were also on the rise during this decade.

1970’s

During the 1970s bohemian styling emerges with blouson sleeves and flowy cotton dresses paired with high necklines and collars. Brides ditched veils and went for hair ribbons and non traditional attire such as pant suits and colourful dresses also became popular.

1980’s

This was the era of the shoulder pads, large gowns with cathedral trains and large gowns with cathedral trains. Dress silhouettes had thick layers of organza, taffeta, ruffles and paired with puffy sleeves. Form fitting gowns still had puffy sleeves and padded shoulders. Necklines and waistlines of gowns were filled with decadent detail, such as lace, beads, and pearls.

1990’s

1990’s was when modern and flirty sheath silhouettes entered the scene. Plus ‘pick up’ skirts and off the shoulder sleeves became fashionable for brides to make it stand out.

2000’s

The 2000s had so much diversification in gown style. Rather than wearing the traditional dress, a brides personal style played a huge role on the dress. Minimalist gowns became popular and strapless gowns dominated with trendy touches of shine to the gown with fabrics such as taffeta and satin.
