Wedding photography and What to Expect

We spoke to Perth wedding photographer Loren Loppolo (@nectarine) about what to expect from your wedding photographer and how to prepare!

Are pre consultations with your photographer essential? If so, what are some important things to decide on & discuss in a pre consultation?

Unless couples are flying in from interstate, I do like to meet my couples before the wedding so I'm not a stranger when I arrive on the day. I guess it's one less thing for couples to feel anxious about on the day when you already know your photographer! In our meeting we run through things like family portraits (and any sensitive family situations I need to know about). We also chat about suitable location options for the portraits. I am particularly fond of natural lighting and work the timeline for the best possible lighting situations.

What are some essential captures a couple should have in their wedding gallery?

I don't really believe it's helpful to work from a shot list, it takes away the spontaneity of the moment and is counter-productive to the candid aesthetic. Having a trusting relationship with your photographer is more important, it gives them the freedom to get creative. Saying that, there are lots of standard shots that are captured, it's the ones in-between them, that they were unaware of me taking that excite me to present to my clients.

How do you make shy couples or brides feel comfortable when getting their photos taken?

I generally tell clients not to pay any attention to me, and forget I'm there. I may gently guide the clients when shooting the portraits but I'm always supportive so they feel relaxed. And there's always champagne!

How do you capture romance in photos?

I find the most romantic images I have taken are the times  when the couple have let their guard down and are fully immersed in the moment. It reveals a sense of vulnerability that gives me the chance to capture something special. This is when the image will become meaningful, not only to me but to the couple too. I look for movement, vulnerability and imperfection - there's beauty in those things and it's what makes an image speak.
